Lesson 9

Phonics- Closed Syllables 3

Let's continue with this final lesson regarding "closed syllables" with short vowel sounds.

Practice

In this lesson we see how the letter 'r' affects the pronunciation of vowels. The pronunciation of syllables with the letter 'r' will be as such: 'ar' as in 'car,' 'er' as in 'her,' 'ir' as in 'bird,' 'or' as in 'for-give,' and 'ur' as in 'church.' Notice that 'er,' 'ir,' and 'ur' all have the same pronunciation. The syllables without 'r' will be pronounced with a normal short vowel sound. Please read down each column out loud.
